Shishi odori is a type of traditional dance where performers wear costumes depicting mythical boars. The Nagatoro Shishi Odori dance has been practiced for more than 350 years, since the founding of the Nagatoro area before the time of the Kanbun Emperor in the Edo period (1603-1868). In 1982, the Nagatoro Shishi Odori Preservation Society was organized by all households in the Nagatoro area, and an instructor organization, "Odorite-kai", was also established to study and refine the dance.
In 1989, with the support and cooperation of Nagatoro Elementary School, the Nagatoro Shishi Odori Club was established for children in grades 4 through 6 who wish to participate in the dance.
