Yasuzawa Kabuki is said to originate in the Genroku age of the Edo period when the Shinjo feudal lord taught it to the local peasants after making the area an entertainment district. Yasuzawa Kabuki reached the height of its popularity between the end of the Meiji and start of the Showa periods. The young men of the area established the “Toanza” theater group and committed themselves to nightly performances. The preservation group was formed in 1988 and has evolved to hold activities that preserve, reenact and hand down the traditional agricultural community kabuki performance.
