This performance has song said to have been recited by the famed Susanoo-no-Mikoto of myth, as well as the elegant dance of princess Yaegaki. People are enchanted by the flowing performance. Princess Yaegaki attempts to offer a sword to the gods of the four pillars, but they do not accept it and fighting ensues. Then Ame-no-Minaka-Nushi, ruler of all things on heaven and earth, arrives to pass judgement. With the fighting ceased, the gods perform song and dance.
The Narahashi Jindai Kagura is said to have started in 1887 (Meiji 20). It stopped being performed temporarily, but was revived with the help of the area’s youth in 1975 (Showa 50). Since 1979 (Showa 54), elementary, junior high school, and high school students participate in activities as successors to this musical tradition.
